The Chinese celebrate their new year by the lunar calendar, on the first new moon at the onset of spring- usually in late January or February. It's a fairly major festival- a festival about family and tradition, which makes the fact that they're alone in the middle of nowhere a bit more awkward than usual. At least they're not in Yiling. But then again, you could still celebrate the New Year in Yiling, as long as there was family around to celebrate with.
