- late night horror
- content warning: gore, death
Late into the night, far after the sun has set and many have gone home for the night, anyone staying late in Skjóta Oddr in Honir's district or Fregnahöll in Odin's district will be met with a very strange, rather disturbing sight. Within a matter of seconds, a complete stranger (or someone terribly, horribly familiar) appears out of thin air, Honir appears less than a hearbeat later, and after a series of violent mess, bright light, and dawning horror, every drop of the interaction disappears from sight. You are left there standing alone - or perhaps in the company of other equally confused and vaguely mortified witnesses. - afternoon delight
- The next morning is bright and sunny, with a few wispy clouds playfully dotting the sky. It's comfortably warm and the natives are in good spirits, excitedly talking about some "new Wanderers" and eagerly inviting everyone to join the gods for lunch up at Gladsheim Palace. The main courtyard has a number of tables with white clothes and comfortable chairs seated in a circle around them, seemingly unassigned and free to claim at will. Natives bustle around offering tea, sandwiches, and sweets to anyone that would like some.
The gods are seated at their own tables, some looking a little more weary than others, but they are all otherwise pleasant and welcoming enough. This is just a casual lunch to welcome new Wanderers. That's all. But if anyone has any... questions, or concerns, the gods are available. Do enjoy the cakes.

[ OOC NOTE: this is our mini-intro log for July! You can find the details of the Third Time's a Charm event here, but anyone is free to come to the castle for lunch whether they witnessed the new Wanderers' arrival, want to greet their new compatriots, or just want some free food. Let us know if you have any questions! ]

[ Look, she doesn't want to insult a god, but you guys really seem to be flying by the seat of your pants here. ]
no subject
We don't know the first one, but the second bit is so interesting.
[ In a... horrible, morbid way. ]
Zero out of eighty-something the first time, and the next three all show up here? There's got to be something to it, I just know it.
no subject
Interesting how? Like you wanna run some tests on us? Experiment? 'Cause I'm not signing up for that.
no subject
Experiments?
[ Gross. ]
I don't know how to do any experiments, and I'm not good at tests. The Allfather might know more about that kind of stuff, if you want to ask him.
[ Honir, no, that was not her point. ]
I just think it's really cool. Something magic had to happen somewhere, somehow, and whatever it is brought them closer to us so we don't have to chase you lot quite as far. The Mother is truly quite amazing in all Her mysteries.
no subject
[ Not again, is what goes unsaid. ]
I'm not used to this magic stuff. We don't have magic at home, so it's sort of weird to just... accept that things happen because of it.
no subject
Well, technically everything in your world is a kind of magic. It's not quite like ours, but the fact that exists at all is very magical.
[ Said entirely too sweet and sincerely. ]
Ours is just more, hmm... colorful?
[ His brows furrow a little; that's probably not quite the right word there. ]
no subject
I think we just call it "science." But um, speaking of magic... are there like, lessons on how to use it? Because I sorta got a thing I can do now, and it just kind of happens sometimes?
no subject
What is it? What can you do? Can I see?
[ Literal actual god, (formerly) capable of bending reality, and he looks so excited. ]
no subject
I mean... it's not even anything good. It's just like, um, I can made this wind sort of come out of my hand?
[ She turns to point her hand out away from him since she really doesn't know all it can do just yet. ]
I have to focus on it to work, but it's kind of surprised me too? I mean, I was using it and I got a little nervous about it, so it kept happening. That's why I was hoping there was training or something?
[ But enough talk. She summons the power and suddenly a gust of wind bursts out of an outstretched hand. Unfortunately, it sends a glass flying off the table too, and she jumps as it shatters on the ground. ]
Shit, sorry! I can clean that up.
no subject
Oh, don't worry about that at all!
[ A lazy flick of the hand, almost like he's dismissing the very idea of her apology, and the glass not only comes back together to form one solid piece but also rises back up to its original position on the table. Honir doesn't even watch as it happens; his attention is entirely on Tessa. ]
You have a gust! How exciting! I don't know about training exactly, but - what does it feel like when you think about making it happen? Especially if your world doesn't have magic. Is it scary for you? Do you feel nervous now too?
[ He is all boundless curiosity and deeply interested in literally anything she has to say about it. ]
no subject
It feels... I dunno.
[ It's weird to talk about and she hates talking about her feelings anyway. But if he can help her better understand magic, then she should take the opportunity, shouldn't she? ]
One the one hand, I'm kind of worried it'll backfire and I'll like, blow my hand off. But on the other hand, it feels like I could push stuff away from me? Not dragon-sized, but maybe it could do something? Right now it doesn't seem like I can do much. Uh, except destroy the table settings.
no subject
We can destroy all the table stuff we want, but I can make something that might help.
[ He has to think about it for a second first though, tapping a finger against his lips as he considers what might be useful. Tessa might be able to pinpoint the exact moment an idea hits him, as the metaphorical light bulb goes off and his eyes light up with excitement. ]
Okay, let's try this!
[ He snaps his fingers and all of the dishware on the table disappears, and then a decently-sized log appears in the empty space with a neat, colorful target on the side facing her. If she checks it in any way, it is real wood and it has a good weight to it; it shouldn't break if she blasts it, but it could still be bowled over if she hits it right. Simple but more or less effective.
(If she looks very closely, she might even notice that the target is not painted onto the wood. It's just the color of the wood, somehow.) ]
Give it your best shot, and try not to be afraid of it! You're made of the same magic, this one's just a little part of you.
[ Big smiles and endless encouragement, like he's already proud of her before she even tries. (Spoilers: he is!) ]
no subject
[ She looks around to make sure she doesn't have an audience for this. If she did, there's no way she could use this magic correctly. It's an unfamiliar thing to her and chances are that there are plenty of people here who already know what they're doing when it comes to using it. ]
Okay. [ Easier said than done when a blast of wind appears out of your hands. ] Made of the same thing. Okay.
[ She looks over the target and gives it a little push to see how heavy it is. Doesn't seem like it'll be too much. She holds up her hands, palms out, and focuses on the target. Memories of Mike teaching her to shoot a gun fly back to her, but this feels different. Aiming a bullet is a lot harder than directing a blast of air. It takes up more area for one thing. So when she uses her magic and pushes outward, the wind more or less hits the bull's eye and the log wiggles on the table before she focuses both hands towards the center and it rolls over. ]
Huh. It felt easier once I had a target to focus on.
[ You know, instead of blowing air around all wily-nily. ]
no subject
There you have it! All things in this world are made of magic, and sometimes if you focus really hard, you can shape it for yourself.
[ That's what it feels like to him, at least. As a god, and of whimsy no less, he can make whatever he wants happen by simply reaching out and making it so. It's not quite the same thing for these mortals, but Honir doesn't see a difference between the wonder of what they can each do.
They are, after all, made of the same magic. All of it is a miracle to him, a gift from the Mother worth celebrating in every way. ]
With some of that training, I'm sure you'll master it in no time at all. You might want to ask one of my brothers though, experiments and lessons and tests are all things I'm not really the best at.
[ He doesn't quite have the attention span for academics, if you can believe it. ]
no subject
Oh, I suck at tests and stuff like that. [ Plus, again, experiments just raises her hackles even if she's not being experimented on. ] But I do wanna practice more. See if I can move heavier stuff, or maybe control how far it goes? I dunno. It seems like I could do more with this. So, um, thanks.
no subject
Oh, yay! I'm glad I could help. Do you want to keep this? I can put it in your room, if you want to play with it when you aren't doing training.
[ He is, of course, referring to the block of wood he summoned for her - which is once again sitting neatly in the center of the table, despite being knocked off seconds ago. ]
no subject
[ She looks at it in surprise before suppressing a laugh. ]
Um, no thanks, dude. My room's pretty small. I don't think it'll fit. Not that I don't like it or anything! But there's sorta just room for a bed and some storage.
no subject
[ His nose crinkles. ]
That doesn't sound very fun. I put a lot more stuff in my rooms.
[ But it is actually just… stuff. Because he doesn't know what's fun for bedrooms. :( ]
no subject
Honestly, after the place I was, I'll take anything. Besides, there are common areas to sit in and stuff.
no subject
[ He seems weirdly happy with this fact? ]
But okay, if you don't have room for stuff, you can always come find me when you want to play again! I can make all the stuff for us.
no subject
[ Is it okay if she calls a god "dude?" He's the chillest, most clueless guy ever, and if he hadn't been sitting with the other gods, she'd think he was just an average joe like her. So hopefully he won't get offended. ]
I'd better get back to the party, but I'll look you up sometime for practice.
[ It's actually something she wants to practice, whereas something like studying up on magic in books isn't her scene at all. ]
no subject
Yay! Have fun!
[ At the party, in future practice, and/or in general. He waves cheerfully at her all the same. ]
