EVENT LOG: HÆIÐRS-MINNI

Who: EVERYONE
What: the Hæiðrs-Minni event log
When: November 16
Where: EVERYWHERE
Rating: PG-13; please take anything higher than this to a private log!

morning: the funeral

The morning sun is lost behind clouds that pour in an endless rain, casting the city into a dark and gloomy shadow. The streets of Asgard are almost entirely empty, although hardly a soul can be found indoors either. Everyone is gathered instead at the riverbank on the castle grounds, where a series of boats are tethered along the short and gently tugging with the current. The native Asgardians place gifts, food, and personal belongings into the boats in memory of their lost loved ones.

Whether you've lost someone, were lost yourself, or carry some other loss within you, the natives invite you to place your own offerings in the boats to send off your sorrows together.

Several hours into the morning, once everyone has had their chance to fill the boats, Heimdall gives a short speech honoring those that fell in the recent battle as the boats are let loose down the river. Honir fires an arrow towards the last one to float away, and Odin lights it on fire as it soars overhead, the single arrow splitting into a wave of shooting stars that strike each boat dead center. The boats alight all at once, and even with the rain pouring overhead, they continue to burn as they float gently out of sight, carrying everyone's grief away with them.

all day: the dedication

Throughout the rest of the day, many of Asgard's residents seem to buzz around Firar Samka, the cultural museum in Mimir's district. A new wing has been added to document Asgard's recent triumphs, but most especially to honor the unexpected stalwart allies of the kingdom: you, the Wanderers from other worlds. This display was added to memorialize the lengths you've gone to in the name of protecting and preserving life within the realm, the core purpose of Asgard in its entirety. You are heroes among gods and this exhibit seeks to portray that for all to see.

As you wander through the display, you might see childish drawings of familiar people fighting a massive dragon, or a large painted mural of solemn faces standing off against an army of ghoulish figures. Skadi can be found beside these, sometimes twisting them into eerie motion or placing a new piece somewhere along the halls.

Elsewhere, you can find Njord alone or accompanied by some human skalds as they sing or read poetry or even sometimes reenact part of the battles against the Red Death and the Army of the Dead. Your characters can watch or join, and they might even hear their own names mentioned among the reverence and song. This is the story of Asgard and the Wanderers conquering death, and you're right at the center of it.

evening: the feast

To end the day on a high note, everyone is invited to Nādhirhöll in Tyr's district, where the entire banquet hall has been decked out in so many colors and leaves and lights that it might feel like walking into an overgrown forest tightly held in the grips of a sparkling autumn. With the growing success of the distilleries in Njord's district, vodka and ales are passed around freely alongside the mountains of food available on tables in every room. People dance and sing and lounge around the leaves with laughter and a joyful appreciation of life in the air.

If your character joins the party, they might notice themselves feeling more warm and relaxed over the course of the evening. They might have the unusual inclination to be more physically affectionate with people and vocally declare their appreciation to them. Deep in this glittering "forest," it is easy to feel lost in the warmth and comfort of good company and relative safety.

This party continues into the morning of the next day, something that many may not realize as deeply wrapped in an artificial forest as they may be. The effects of the curse fade as everyone stumbles their way out of Nādhirhöll, leaving a heavy blanket of strangely warm exhaustion behind. It's been a long and potentially emotional day, but the city seems to be brought together under a shared relief and a new tomorrow.

Jim smiles down at her. She doesn't have to cheer him up, it really isn't something he'd demand or expect of her, but he's grateful that she even tries.

Some things just take time, though. And this particular scenario isn't the best when it comes to feeling happy or cheerful right now.

"Still. It just... doesn't feel like enough," he says, falling quiet for a good while. But she's trying so much to cheer him up, it makes him feel like he owes her an explanation, at the very least. So, he goes on to add. "I... died. Out there. I was turned into..."

He trails off with a muted shudder, looking out across the water. "Some of these people... are dead because of me. There are no offerings that can fix that."

For a moment she's quiet.

"You're right. There aren't." Not that it makes bringing those offerings less of a good or meaningful gesture, but even ever trying to be optimistic Chizuru knows that there are some stings that don't heal as easily. She too still carries the guilt deep inside of her from having seen people die in front of her - even if she wasn't the one killing them.

That added fact must make it so much worse for him.

"It doesn't reverse anything.. since there's nothing that can do that. But it still shows you're a good person. You didn't mean for those people to die." Even though she had only gotten a first impression from him before, she wouldn't have imagine him to be the type to be gleeful over other people's deaths even before seeing him so sad now.

He tries to be a good person, really. Sometimes that certainty wavers. He's not entirely sure that he's as good when he lets his impetuous nature take over, going for rash decisions without truly considering all the consequences.

Granted that dying and coming back to life as some kind of half-dead murderous creature isn't in his scope of experiences, but he should've thought that something terrible could've happened when he dared to venture further than anyone else, with such a small group and no knowledge whatsoever of what dangers laid ahead of them.

Still, she's trying so hard to cheer him up, how can he reject that? So he offers her a smile, genuine this time, resting a hand briefly on her shoulder. "Thank you, Chizuru. I can't do anything to undo what's happened, but... I do hope that wherever these people's souls are, this small gesture will bring them more peace."

"Me too." She smiles back at him, even though there's something faintly apologetic in it. "I'm sorry I can't do more for you." Even though she knows it's not exactly her fault. No one could do anything to make things 100% right again in this situation, let alone her. But she still feels like apologizing nonetheless - if not just because a good person like him deserves better in general.

"I know today will probably be a tough day, but.. if you ever need some company after today, you can always contact me. I'll gladly cook you a nice meal or something to eat together."

And, you know, it'd just be a good way to get to know each other a little better without it being such a sad occasion like today.

"It's alright," Jim shakes his head, smiling. "You don't have. I think I just need some time." He may never get over it, but wounds do close, even if they may leave a scar behind. The mere fact that she shows a willingness to help is enough comfort as it is.

He perks up a little at the mention of a meal, glancing over at her. "Oh, I've learned how to cook a few dishes. Maybe I can cook us a nice meal instead."

So it seems his call for cooking lessons really did work out!

"Really? I'd definitely like to try." It's not like Chizuru to be distrustful or wary, after all, even when it comes to the cooking skills of someone who may still be slightly new to it. If anything, it sounds fun just for the fact that she's so used to cooking for others that it feels novel to have someone cook for her instead.

It did, in fact he got quite a few offers, and he used the opportunity to learn quite a few different types of cooking. Much like in anything else, he's been a quick learner, and pretty adventurous when it comes to experimenting with new stuff.

"Brilliant. I mean, it's all vegetable based, since I haven't been eating meat lately. But if that's alright by you, then I'll cook us something sometime," he says, then adds with a little smile. "I've even learned how to make a few sweet pies."

[personal profile] tealeafs 2019-12-04 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Of course that's alright. We didn't have meat all the time back home either."

Even though they sure were big fans of meat where she comes from.. But then again, that's kind of what happens when you live in times of war. Not all food is going to be readily available all the time, so Chizuru definitely is not a picky person.

"Sweet pies actually sound good. I like sweet things."

"Oh, good. I've gotten fairly good when it comes to sweets. Pies, cakes, mousse... Still learning how to bake cookies but I'll get there, too."

Oddly he doesn't have much of a sweet tooth, but he has to admit it's very relaxing to bake things, even if he isn't always baking something for a specific purpose. There's always someone around interested in helping themselves to a slice of cake anyway, so it's not like it'll go to waste.

"That sounds great. Thank you for the offer." Although honestly, she's already just glad that the thought of the kinds of food he can make can maybe distract him from everything else here - even if it's just for a moment. She doubts it could completely put all the things he was thinking about just now out of his head, after all.

But all little steps help. And Chizuru wants to believe they'll all be alright in the end.

"Then it's a deal. Just let me know when you have time, okay..? I can always free up some time for it."
winscenario: (hundred thirty four.)

[personal profile] winscenario 2019-12-13 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Anything he can think of that doesn't directly relate to to what happened is something he's more than happy to focus on, honestly. He knows eventually his thoughts will circle back to what happened, but he'll take any distraction he can get.

"Sometime this week would be fine. Things seem to have settled down somewhat," he says, gaze a little distant. "I can... cook us something in my house for lunch. It should be fine for you to come by during the day."

[personal profile] tealeafs 2019-12-13 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"Okay. I can do that." Chizuru does tend to fill up her schedule with chores and other such busiwork, but since she's doing it out of her own volition, it's easy to decide to go lunch somewhere else. Especially when it's a good way to get to know someone better - and a good way to check in on Jim later to see if he's doing better by then than he is today.

"Which house are you staying at?"
winscenario: (hundred fifty six.)

[personal profile] winscenario 2019-12-13 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Honir," he answered. "Well, technically I'm living on Peter Quill's ship, the Benatar. But it's easier to cook in the kitchen in my assigned housing, and it's a nicer place for guests. What about you?"
tealeafs: (as you bloom again)

[personal profile] tealeafs 2019-12-14 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"I live over in the Frigg district." But more importantly, there seems to be something about what he just said that caught her attention, judging from how she looks at him.

"I think I know him though." Peter Quill that is. Not that they've talked tons, but enough for her to remember him. "I didn't know he had a ship here.. Is it somewhere around here?" She glances back at the nearby water. That's just the only kind of ship that Chizuru can think of.
winscenario: (hundred thirty two.)

[personal profile] winscenario 2019-12-22 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, not here," Jim shakes his head. "It's at the park in Skadi's district. It looks like it just... crashed there."

Realizing why she's looking at the water, he lets out a soft chuckle, smiling a little. "It's a starship. A ship that travels through space, not water."
tealeafs: (i stretch my arms)

[personal profile] tealeafs 2019-12-22 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
At least his description makes it easy for her to realise what it is. Thankfully she's already learned a lot about the concept of space in this place, so she instead looks up at the sky for a moment. "So up there..?"

.. wait.

"You said 'crashed'.. so you think it fell out of the sky? But that's so dangerous if it's really a whole ship!"

"I have no idea if that's how it ended up where it is now," he says honestly. "I heard some things just show up out of nowhere, so maybe it just popped up one day."

He smiles a little at her reaction, shaking his head. "It's not that big. It's pretty large, granted, but... well, my ship was definitely much bigger than that, so it could've been worse."
